Adaptation

Two solutions were developed to adapt to air pollution. The first is a mobile application called Air2Day designed to advise on the air quality, and the second is about the use of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) to purify polluted air.

Air Quality Monitoring Adviser

Air2Day mobile application is an end-to-end software solution capable of providing up to date weather and pollution values and health recommendations based on User profiles and personal health data, while making use of environmental satellite data processed in the back-end. This system provides personalized recommendations to help users avoiding highly polluted zones.

Semi-Active Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis has received considerable attention in recent years with a huge potential in air purification applications. This work focusses on the semi-passive use of photocatalytic surfaces in streets as an innovative method for removing anthropogenic pollutants (especially volatile organic compounds or VOC’s) from urban air. The proposed method is based on lamellae, coated with a photocatalyst (TiO2), lightened with UV light and arranged horizontally at the walls of street canyons to purify air upon contact.

Detection of Human Activities in Wildlands to Prevent the Occurrence of Wildfires

Human activities in wildland are responsible for the largest part of wildfire cases. This work uses deep learning algorithms on MDEO remote sensing images to detect human activity in wildlands, to prevent fire occurrence that may be caused by humans. Link.
